How to Achieve ONC Interoperability Rule Compliance

While much of 2020 has been consumed with how the healthcare ecosystem can effectively manage the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been another challenge on the horizon, which is achieving ONC interoperability rule compliance.

As part of the 21st Century Cures Act, the interoperability rule primarily focuses on data exchange and patient information blocking – supporting patients accessing and sharing their electronic health information, which will aid overall care coordination.

EHR Intelligence recently ran this feature story that highlights how providers and HIEs can achieve compliance. For providers, much of the story surrounds the information blocking provisions of the rule. And, the best way to achieve compliance is to take advantage of resources like the Information Blocking Compliance Boot Camp from The Sequoia Group.

With regards to HIEs, compliance will come in the form of making patient data more interoperable. During the ONC Tech Forum in August, Dr. Donald Rucker, National Coordinator for Health IT, highlighted how HIEs will serve as the vital link for delivering the final rule.

In addition, Michael Gagnon, the Executive Director for HealtHIE Nevada, discussed how his HIE is prepared for the interoperability rule.

“We're going to focus on far less standard Consolidated-Clinical Document Architecture (CCDA) and more on standard United Stated Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI),” said Gagnon in the EHR Intelligence article. “This is not only much more constrained, but it also includes labs that must be coded to LOINC and things like that.”

RosettaHealth has a long history of helping HIEs to best advance their missions through improved connectivity and efficiency in health data exchange.
