Health IT Answers: The Birth, Adolescence and Future Rise of Health Information Exchange

With the holiday season officially upon us, this is the time of year when Buff Colchagoff, CEO of RosettaHealth, provides a creative look at health information exchange in his annual Health IT Answers article.

For this year’s installment, he focused on the birth, adolescence and rise of health data exchange. Much like nativity scenes making their annual appearances around neighborhoods and churches, now is an ideal time to reflect on the birth of modern health information exchange.

He highlighted how the Christian nativity health information exchange arrived on a special occasion with wise men bearing gifts in the form of the stimulus package of the HITECH Act. These tidings of joy brought about the ability to truly exchange medical records.

In the wake of the HITECH Act, there have certainly been growing pains when it comes to health data exchange. Though, as the COVID-19 pandemic has shown us, investments in infrastructure for public and population health has offered immense dividends – pointing to a brighter future for health data exchange.

Finally, Buff rounded out the article with some innovative use cases around PCDH and Image Pre-Fetch, which require capabilities and coordination beyond just individual point protocols.
