The Biggest Health Data Exchange Hurdles Today

In order to attain true health data exchange capabilities, there are a number of hurdles that continue to challenge care organizations today – from data blocking issues to adherence to unified standards to overall costs.

Becker’s Hospital Review recently interviewed eight health system CIOs and other healthcare industry leaders to get their take on today’s health data exchange challenges. Here’s a quick list of these hurdles:

  • The speed at which stakeholders can be coordinated via data sharing agreements.

  • Without an understanding of clinical workflow, access to discrete data elements can be somewhat meaningless.

  • Cost and lack of adherence to established standards.

  • The lack of a federal mandate requiring healthcare organizations to share data among all organizations.

  • Some EHRs' lack capability to have bidirectional interfaces to send and receive protected health information from other systems.

  • Patient matching.

  • Standardized systems do not reward innovation quickly.

  • The lack of vision and will to create a truly interoperable system.

In terms of solutions, these executives discussed how the evolution of APIs and FHIR will enable open and connected communities of health.

In addition, it is important to note that there are already industry players that have been offering health data exchange solutions for many years.

For example, the RosettaHealth team worked closely with the ONC in defining and deploying standards, creating reference implementations, and establishing the fabric of interoperability that is expanding across the industry today. As a result of this legacy, currently more than ten million health records move across the RosettaHealth platform per month.

The RosettaHealth HealthBus platform leverages technology, server-less, and cloud infrastructure to provide scalable, secure information transport, data wrangling, and orchestration services – removing development time, cost and maintenance of in-house infrastructure.
