Advancing Public Health Data Sharing

With a foundation of supporting policies for enhanced health IT use, Pew Charitable Trusts is looking to improve data sharing in ways that enhance how public health agencies can access health data.

Much of this has driven CMS to finalize policies that will require health care providers who treat Medicare patients to share more health data with public health agencies.

In addition, the organization has a long history of driving further change when it comes to health data sharing, and it continues today.

For example, the organization launched its health information technology project in 2016 to help improve the interoperability and safety of EHR systems and, ultimately, the quality of care that patients receive.

As highlighted in this recent EHR Intelligence article, the ONC updated the US Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI), a set of data that all EHRs must be able to share – based on input from Pew. The updates made in 2021 included social determinants of health (SDOH) data, which can help improve care for marginalized patients.

Pew also played a role influencing CMS to require health IT developers and healthcare providers to use application programming interfaces (APIs) to improve interoperability.

Thanks to the efforts of organizations such as Pew, the door is now open for the overall care community to best leverage next-generation health data interoperability solutions.

For example, RosettaHealth's HealthBus is a SaaS-based solution that enables full health information exchange capabilities for sending and receiving all standardized exchange formats. It also offers real-time network analytics capabilities, which include detailed connection status as well as metrics and logs about each facility, feed or protocol.
