ONC Announces First Group of TEFCA Qualified Health Information Networks

Last week, the ONC unveiled the first six networks that have been approved to be onboarded as Qualified Health Information Networks (QHINs) under TEFCA, the government’s framework for a nationwide health information exchange.

These new QHINs include Epic, CommonWell Health Alliance, eHealth Exchange, and other industry members, who have committed to go live within TEFCA in 12 months.

The QHIN applications were approved by the nonprofit Sequoia Project, which was selected by ONC to serve as the Recognized Coordinating Entity (RCE) to support the implementation of TEFCA and determines the process and requirements for becoming a QHIN.

Be sure to check out our RosettaHealth podcast interview with Mariann Yeager, CEO of The Sequoia Project, who discusses how her organization achieved the RCE designation by the ONC.

The goal of TEFCA’s is to create a simplified and standardized connectivity infrastructure for providers, plans, patients and public health agencies. In addition, it was noted that HHS continues to receive interest in other organizations to become QHINs.

In addition, in 2019, Buff Colchagoff, CEO, RosettaHealth, authored a guest article for Health IT Answers titled, “Will HIEs Become the Next Route 66 When TEFCA Arrives?”  The article discusses now HIEs can adapt to TEFCA by identifying high-value use cases of the future, expanding connectivity and having an infrastructure that can support highly flexible, orchestrated services.

It is also important to note that the RosettaHealth platform makes it possible to share data with other systems on CommonWell, which has more than 22,000 healthcare provider sites in its nationwide network.

The RosettaHealth HealthBus platform makes this all possible by leveraging technology, server-less, and cloud infrastructure to provide scalable, secure information transport, data wrangling, and orchestration services – removing development time, and cost and maintenance of in-house infrastructure.
