World Economic Forum: An AI-Enabled Healthcare Future is Coming
For better or worse, 2023 is shaping up to be the year of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The near ubiquity of ChatGPT in the news cycle is pointing to AI’s impact on nearly every aspect of our professional and personal lives.
In the healthcare arena, the World Economic Forum recently published its Global Health and Healthcare Strategic Outlook report, which points to a fully AI-enabled future. It also points to how more than half of the U.S. population is affected by chronic diseases, which contributes to more than 85 percent of overall healthcare costs.
To address these challenges, the report states, improvements in prevention, monitoring and consultation through digital and AI-enabled healthcare approaches could significantly increase healthcare access and reduce costs.
While the potential impacts AI are still being determined, digital innovation is ever-expanding in the development of new solutions and opportunities. However, the report highlights how “the need for strong data sharing, security and confidentiality, greater internet access is a major enabler required to ensure equitable access to new digital healthcare innovations.”
In addition, effective health data sharing is critical for the future of digital health. The report discusses how applications must be harmonized across the global healthcare industry. In order to achieve this, we must make different healthcare systems and tools interoperable so they can “speak” to each other and utilize different datasets.
The report closes with how we need partnerships between digital solutions providers, policymakers and stakeholders such as the civil sector and philanthropy, to rapidly deploy digital solutions at scale.
