2024 Interoperability Predictions: The Commoditization of Health IT Connectivity

With the TEFCA officially going live in December, 2024 will certainly be a big year when it comes to advances around health data interoperability.

Once again, our friends at Health IT Answers tapped into a wide-range of health data exchange thought leaders to compile their annual interoperability predictions article.

Many of the key themes highlighted include advancing data quality, liberating data from legacy systems, the rise of value-based data sharing, and more. Buff Colchagoff, CEO of RosettaHealth, provided his annual prediction, which focused on the commoditization of health IT connectivity.

Here’s Buff’s prediction:

We know of many ways that health IT connectivity and interoperability have progressed over the past 15 years — from the National Networks like eHealth Exchange, Carequality and Commonwell to FHIR to widespread ADT notifications. 2024 is the year where the third phase of adoption will really start taking off.

The first phase was a large organization that could afford to spend millions on interoperability. The second phase was large vendors (mainly EHRs) that included these connections in their products. The third phase is where small vendors and organizations leverage these services en mass. The cost, availability of tools and amount of data limited adoption by this 3rd tier — but no more. Cost of access, availability of tools and sheer amount of data is now there for small organizations to adopt and innovate. Should be a very innovative 2024!

This prediction ties into Buff’s recent Health IT Answers holiday article, where he discusses RosettaHealth’s new self-service national network product that will be launching in 2024. This new solution will greatly reduce costs and the time to integrate and test for smaller organizations wanting to join in. Bringing more sources onto the national networks will make the journey smoother for all involved.

As always, we will be covering key health data interoperability stories and trends throughout 2024.
