Carequality to Thoughtfully Align with TEFCA

As an interoperability framework that enables data exchange among health information networks on a national level, Carequality supports the exchange of more than 900 million documents each month.

In addition, Carequality achieves this high-volume of exchange with its network that is comprised of more than 45 networks linking more than 50,000 outpatient clinics and 4,200 hospitals.

The organization recently announced that it will “thoughtfully align” with the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement.

“As consensus builds around TEFCA, Carequality is focused on making improvements to the framework’s policies and procedures to continue to support the exchange of nearly 1 billion clinical documents monthly,” stated this recent blog post.  “As TEFCA forges its own path ramping up production rollout this year, the Carequality community is watching, learning, and, in some cases, participating in TEFCA.”

In conjunction with this announcement, EHR provider Epic aims to have all its clients committed to TEFCA participation by the end of 2024, with a go-live target for the end of 2025, as highlighted in this recent EHR Intelligence article.

“By the end of 2024, our goal is that the full Epic community will have committed to transition to TEFCA with plans to be live by the end of 2025,” according to this recent press statement. “Epic Nexus makes it easy for our customers to join TEFCA, and many have already signed up. Epic will continue to support our customers’ connectivity through Carequality during the transition to help ensure the ongoing success of national healthcare interoperability.”

With both Carequality and TEFCA rising in importance when it comes to facilitating true health data exchange, many care organizations want to take advantage of the framework, but often don’t know how to actually do this.

This is why we published a blog post  on the value of having care systems outsource their connections to Carequality. For example, RosettaHealth offers a SaaS-based platform that allows you to connect to additional facilities, receive and query medical records, and access regional and national networks such as Carequality.

While 70 percent of hospitals, clinics and care providers are leveraging connections to Carequality, there’s still 30 percent of these care organizations sitting on the sidelines.  Through Epic’s efforts, and the easy access to Carequality through the RosettaHealth platform, it’s very possible that this gap will be closing by 2025.
