Health Information Exchanges (HIE) offer the most-optimal route for care providers to meet new CMS interoperability rules for sharing patient information via the ADT messaging standard, according to the CommonWell Health Alliance.

As highlighted in a recent EHR Intelligence interview, Paul Wilder, Executive Director of CommonWell Health Alliance, discussed how event notifications encourage provider-to-provider communication for enhanced care coordination, and cost-savings.

This is in response to the CMS Interoperability and Patient Access final rule that requires providers to demonstrate that their EHR can send patient event notifications via the ADT messaging standard with other primary care practitioners and groups.

In the article, Wilder discusses the challenges that come with meeting the new ADT messaging standard, which include contact information for post-acute care providers often not being EHR systems, as well as how the final rule does not clearly describe how care organizations can send and receive messages.
