Big Tech Not as Nimble as Legacy Digital Health Players
For several years now, the largest technology providers have been dipping their toes in the HIT arena. Much of this is being driven by overall digital transformation efforts and a more consumer-focus in healthcare.
For years, players such as Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Oracle, and Google have transformed our daily lives through innovation. But, is this transformation working in the healthcare arena?
According to a recent KLAS Research and Bain & Company report, Big Tech is developing solutions that don’t align with health systems’ most pressing needs in the areas of revenue cycle management (RCM), patient intake, cybersecurity, clinical information systems, and telehealth.
For the most part, large tech providers are focused on low-priority investment areas of staffing, patient engagement, clinical communications, business analytics, and clinical decision support solutions, according to the report.
In March, Healthcare IT News published this story about how Big Tech does not understand the nuances and complexities of healthcare. Much of this comes down to the massive amount of inconsistent and siloed data that is not easily interpreted or shared across organizations.
This is why legacy digital health players are more apt to address today’s transformation needs, especially when it comes to health data exchange and interoperability.
For example, RosettaHealth has a deep legacy of establishing the fabric of health data interoperability. In fact, the RosettaHealth team worked closely with the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) defining and deploying standards, creating reference implementations, and establishing what health data interoperability is today.
Specifically, the team was instrumental in successfully transitioning the NwHIN Exchange (now eHealth) into production, defining the standards and protocols in the Direct Project, and spearheading several Direct pilots.
From this experience of defining these core standards, the RosettaHealth team parlayed this expertise into developing and deploying the most optimal health data exchange solution.
The combination of this kind of real industry experience and being nimble is why legacy digital health providers will continue to standout.
