ONC/CMS Interoperability Rules and Health Payers

From information blocking to embracing new programming interface (API) standards, the upcoming deadlines for compliance for ONC and CMS are causing potential challenges for the larger healthcare ecosystem.

Fortunately, for health payers, AHIP recently issued a comprehensive briefing that aims to help this sector of the care arena achieve true compliance.

According to this recent Health Payer Intelligence article, the finalized rule requires payers to provide an API, which gives patients access to certain health data including personal data in accordance with the ONC 21st Century Cures Act final rule. Payers must also offer a Provider Directory API, which clearly delineates which providers are in-network.

Information blocking has also been a major issue in the health vendor eco-system. Thankfully, the The Sequoia Project is offering a new Information Blocking Compliance Boot Camp, as well as a free public resource center to help prepare and train healthcare and health IT organizations for the November 2nd ONC Interoperability Rule deadline.

Be sure to listen to our recent RosettaHealth podcast interview with Mariann Yeager, CEO of The Sequoia Project, about this new effort here.

We also recently ran a story about how HIEs will play a critical role in the delivery of the final ONC Interoperability Rule. Dr. Donald Rucker, National Coordinator for Health IT, recently stated that HIEs can enhance long-term data storage and aggregation to boost the quality of care overall.

RosettaHealth has a long history of helping to foster the ability to rapidly exchange clinical data.

In March, we announced the launch of the new HealthBus Essentials solution, which offers the easiest, most powerful way to move and process clinical data. It connects to any facilities’ clinical system enabling clients to receive and/or send real-time clinical data in a matter of days.

As the entire care arena develops plans for achieving compliance for the new interoperability deadlines, the right health data exchange platform can help to achieve compliance, while also dramatically improving overall care quality.
