Rise of Health Data Exchange in Precision Medicine
The next-wave of healthcare is pointing clearly towards precision medicine. According to the Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI), precision medicine is “an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person.”
This whole care approach will allow doctors and researchers to predict more accurately which treatment and prevention strategies for a particular disease will work in which groups of people – ultimately resulting in better care quality.
According to a recent EHR Intelligence article, many EHRs are currently incapable of providing this type of customized care, and further optimization and increased interoperability are needed to achieve this level of care.
However, many of the APIs that are being highlighted as part of the ONC/CMS interoperability rule could be the answer, especially when it comes to health data exchange in this emerging arena. The article also highlights how test results, secondary findings, and the clinician’s interpretation of data could soon be accessible to the patient.
Based on the ONC interoperability rule, the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) recommends the use of Health Level 7 (HL7) genomics model and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) to enhance interoperability.
This is where SAAS-based solutions like RosettaHealth HealthBus Essentials come into play. Offering the easiest, most powerful way to move and process clinical data, this solution connects to any facilities’ clinical system enabling clients to receive and/or send real-time clinical data in a matter of days.
As precision medicine continues to gain traction, the right health data exchange platform help advance interoperability, and make truly whole patient care a new reality. To learn more about how
