Developing the Infrastructure for Advanced Health Information Exchange

As the value of health data exchange for lowering costs and improving care outcomes continues to come to the forefront, so are the challenges for bringing this paradigm to life.

A recent EHR Intelligence article pointed to how providers and HIT professionals are seeking out health information exchange solutions, but developing a sufficient infrastructure can be difficult. Thankfully, HIEs are helping care providers to address these challenges, and there are SaaS-based solutions for breaking down data interoperability barriers.

Around this time last year, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, we hosted a RosettaHealth podcast interview with Doug Fridsma, former President and CEO of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and former Chief Science Officer at ONC; Tim Pletcher, Executive Director of MiHIN; and Buff Colchagoff, CEO of RosettaHealth.

This podcast interview discussed how the role of health IT infrastructure has never been more important. To be able to make policies, understand how to treat the virus, and coordinate care, this infrastructure is serving as the foundational guide for driving a more-effective response – whether during or after the pandemic.

In addition to facilitating normal health data exchange, health IT infrastructure is still playing a key role in helping to share data with front-line care workers at field hospitals and testing facilities – without needing to re-invent new processes, standards and solutions – during COVID-19.

And, there are innovations that enhance the HIT infrastructure for true health data exchange. RosettaHealth's HealthBus is a SaaS-based solution that enables full health information exchange capabilities for sending and receiving all standardized exchange formats. It also offers real-time network analytics capabilities, which include detailed connection status as well as metrics and logs about each facility, feed or protocol.

With patient data exchange continuing to be a priority, care organizations are able to quickly embrace these types of capabilities – without needing costly investments in infrastructure.
