HIE Collaboratives Enhance Health Data Interoperability

HIE collaboratives are paving the way for nationwide health data interoperability through shared best practices and capabilities, as highlighted by the Consortium for State and Regional Interoperability (CSRI).

Formed earlier this year, CSRI’s vision is to see individual and population health improve nationwide through robust electronic health data interoperability. The founding members of this organization include CRISP, Colorado Regional Health Information Organization (CORHIO), CyncHealth, Health Current, Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE) and Manifest MedEx.

According to a recent EHR Intelligence article, all CSRI members faced various policy barriers to data sharing with their state governments during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this collaborative helped the HIEs to share best practices and ideas to meet pandemic-related case reporting needs.

This included everything from comparing notes and processes, to sharing best practices for building relationships with state agencies. In addition, last month SHIEC announced the launch of Civitas Networks for Health, which will serve as a platform for:

  • Sharing opportunities for increased collaboration and shared learning.

  • Driving thought leadership and technical expertise on community-level improvements.

  • Enhancing education and public advocacy regarding the benefits, functions and role of HIEs, RHICs and multidisciplinary organizations.

Supporting national health data exchange capabilities will certainly be a driver for enhancing the overall quality of care in the U.S. Efforts like HIE collaboratives are emerging as the foundation for bringing this vision to life.
