HIMSS TV: ONC on Data Interoperability and FHIR
With HIMSS24 coming up next month, the topic of health data interoperability will certainly be front-and-center, especially as TEFCA keeps coming more into the forefront.
Earlier this week, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) announced the addition of two new Qualified Health Information Networks (QHIN), one of them being the CommonWell Health Alliance.
According to the ONC, QHINs are the pillars of TEFCA network-to-network exchange, providing shared services and governance to securely route queries, responses, and messages across networks for health care stakeholders including patients, providers, hospitals, health systems, payers, and public health agencies.
Along these lines, HIMSS TV recently promoted its recent interview with Micky Tripathi, ONC national coordinator. In the interview, he discussed TEFCA’s fast track to FHIR exchange, the FHIR roadmap, as well as concerns among EHR vendors on electronic case reporting and supporting data scalability to enable payers to advance interoperability. He also reflected on recent interoperability milestones, as well as reasonable AI transparency.
Mr. Tripathy will also be participating in an upcoming Health Affairs webinar, where he will discuss patient access to health data, artificial intelligence, and the recent TEFCA launch.
