DirectTrust: The Future of TEFCA Facilitated FHIR
The recent interoperability changes to the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) can enable FHIR API transactions supported by the DirectTrust network. This was the key theme of a recent Health Data Management guest article by Scott Stuewe, President and CEO of DirectTrust.
In addition to serving as a forum for a consensus-driven community focused on health communication, DirectTrust is the developer of trust frameworks and supportive services for secure information exchange like Direct Secure Messaging and trusted, compliant document submission.
In case you are not familiar with Direct Secure Messaging, it is a secure communication transport mechanism for sensitive information over the open Internet. It achieves this by utilizing digital certificates and a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to encrypt the contents of a message.
With Direct Secure Messaging and facilitated FHIR in mind, here are some key points from Stuewe’s Health Data Management guest article:
The facilitated FHIR approach will fundamentally alter the role of the qualified health information network (QHIN) in TEFCA, relieving them of the task of relaying or brokering transactions
FHIR APIs enable interoperability between two systems where one system authenticates to the other directly using the fundamental rails of Internet protocol, much like we bank and shop on the Internet.
DirectTrust is excited to support the community by offering accreditations that test conformance with Unified Data Access Profiles (UDAP) profiles.
Next month DirectTrust is hosting its 2024 Annual Conference, The Future of Trust in Health, which is taking place September 22-25 at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark. In addition to highlighting this key topic from Stuewe’s article, the event will bring together healthcare industry leaders, policymakers, technology innovators, and stakeholders to discuss the critical importance of trust in health data exchange.
As highlighted in this press release, Micky Tripathi, the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will deliver “Enabling the 21st Century Digital infrastructure” and Susannah Fox, a health and technology strategist and former Chief Technology Officer for HHS, will present “The Patient-Led Data Revolution” as day one keynotes.
