ONC Announces Strategic Plan and Interoperability Standards Updates in Advance of Annual Meeting
With the 2020 ONC Annual Meeting coming up next week, the agency has been busy announcing new updates, which will certainly drive many of the discussions at the conference.
First, the ONC released its 2020-2025 Federal Health IT Strategic Plan, which places a big focus on patients having access to their own electronic health information to help manage their health and shop for care.
“The draft federal strategic plan supports the provisions in the 21st Century Cures Act that will help to bring electronic health information into the hands of patients through smartphone applications,” said Don Rucker, M.D., in this press release. “We look forward to public comment to help guide the federal government’s strategy to have a more connected health system that better serves patients.”
The public comment period on the draft of the 2020-2025 Federal Health IT Strategic Plan ends on March 18, 2020 at 11:59 pm ET.
Second, the ONC announced that it has added six new updates for the 2020 version of the Interoperability Standards Advisory (ISA), which are the following:
A Redesigned ISA Homepage
Additional Social, Behavioral, and Psychological Interoperability Needs
Care Coordination for Referrals
Clinical Notes
Patient Reported Outcomes
Cognitive Status
As we highlighted last week, this year’s 2020 ONC Annual Meeting will highlight the theme of “Connecting Policy and Technology: Bringing the EHR to the Patient,” and cover everything from FHIR to interoperability barriers/benefits to patients accessing their health information.
