During his first day in office, President Biden released his COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan, which includes the distribution of 100 million vaccines in 100 days.

This highly ambitious plan will involve relying on health data gathering and sharing so our nation can confront the final stage of this pandemic that has impacted the entire globe for almost a year. This involves an Executive Order that drives new mandates for Federal agencies to collect, share, and analyze data related to COVID-19 response and recovery.

According to the Executive Order, the government “will track a range of performance measures and data including cases, testing, vaccinations, and hospital admissions, and will make real-time information readily available to the public and to policymakers at the federal, state, and local level.”

The Biden administration also plans to use demographic data to identify communities hit hardest by the pandemic and support them in acquiring vaccines.

In other Biden Administration news, Micky Tripathi has been appointed as the new National Coordinator for Health IT. In addition to being the president and CEO of the Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC), Tripathi serves on the board of directors for boards of directors of the Sequoia Project, CommonWell Health Alliance, the CARIN Alliance, HL7 International, and the HL7 FHIR Foundation.

According to this recent EHR Intelligence article, he will soon implement the ONC interoperability rule – with the information blocking provisions and requirements compliance date now being April 5, 2021.

The combination of the aggressive COVID-19 response plan, and a health data interoperability expert being at the helm of the ONC point to how health information exchange will be further in the forefront of the pandemic response, and in the larger health IT ecosystem.
