QHN and CORHIO Partner to Enhance Health Data Exchange Capabilities in Colorado
As we highlighted late last year, there is an emerging trend where regional HIEs are seeking out partnerships in their states to better serve larger patient populations through health data exchange.
First, we had the new integration between Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services (MiHIN) and Great Lakes Health Connect (GLHC). Now, Quality Health Network (QHN) and Colorado Regional Health Information Organization (CORHIO), have announced that the two HIEs have expanded their exchange of secure patient data, enabling better care coordination for millions of Colorado patients.
A recent EHR Intelligence article explains how providers throughout Colorado can easily search either HIE system when looking for a patient’s medical record, test or lab results, clinical documents, and/or other valuable medical information. The health information can be accessed on any EHR as long as the provider is under QHN or CORHIO.
Ski season is a big driver for this effort. According to the CORHIO press release, if a person ends up in a ski town hospital emergency room, the doctors there can quickly access their health information from their home doctors. When the person returns home, their local doctors can access data from the emergency room visit to help with recovery.
“The improved flow of information between QHN and CORHIO improves the quality and affordability of care Coloradans receive, for not only ski injuries but for all medical needs, by ensuring clinicians have access to the right information at the right time," said Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera, in the press release. "This also reduces the need for duplicate tests and labs which ultimately saves Coloradans money. As the Director of the Office of Saving People Money on Health Care, I support this important work and applaud the Office of eHealth Innovation and eHealth Commission for leading these improvements through Colorado’s Health IT Roadmap.”
In the recent Health IT Answers holiday column by Buff Colchagoff, CEO of RosettaHealth, writes that HIEs continually need to demonstrate tangible value to their customers, whether it’s hospitals, payers, individual practices or state agencies. The new health data exchange partnership between QHN and CORHIO is a prime example of HIEs finding ways to add more value.
