Nicolette, Inc: A Difficult Personal Experience Leads to Creation of Cutting-Edge NICU Innovation

It is often the most difficult challenges in life that create game-changing innovations.

For Phil Martie, the founder of Nicolette, Inc., and his wife, this was especially true after having a newborn son and daughter that were immediately admitted into a NICU. Weighing 1.5 pounds each, this was an incredibly difficult time, and sadly, their daughter Nicolette did not survive. Though, their son Bexley is now a healthy six-year old.

This experience made Phil realize that there had to be a better way to empower parents who are dealing with premature babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU).

This led to the founding of Nicolette, Inc., whose goal is to empower patients fighting acute health battles to be their own competent advocates. The company’s core solution, NicoBoard, dramatically improves parents' participation in their baby's care and enhances the partnership with their healthcare team.

The solution provides families with the confidence and competence to be better caregivers, while also potentially reducing hospital length of stay and readmissions – yielding substantial savings to healthcare systems and payers.

In addition, CHOC started using NicoBoard in the fall of 2020. In this recent CHOC Foundation blog post, the hospital discusses how the solution is a “tablet-based application that translates a stream of numbers pulled from their baby’s electronic medical record – data such as body temperature, weight gain and loss, feed volumes and more – into easily understood, simple sentences complemented by visual aids like graphs and charts.”

In January, we announced that the NicoBoard is leveraging the HealthBus solution, a SaaS-based offering that enables full health information exchange capabilities for sending and receiving all standardized exchange formats. It also offers real-time network analytics capabilities, which include detailed connection status as well as metrics and logs about each facility, feed or protocol.

We also had the special pleasure of speaking with Phil in a RosettaHealth podcast interview where he shared his story, and how – through his own personal experiences – he continues to create solutions that truly empower parents who are dealing with newborns in NICUs.
