The Evolution of AI in Healthcare

With the launch of ChatGPT happening one year ago, many assume artificial intelligence (AI) is something new that’s just been thrown out into the world. The reality is that the rise of AI in healthcare has had a long evolution that continues now, and well into the future.

As highlighted in a recent Forb today’s AI landscape is a testament to the relentless pursuit of innovation by technologists that have shaped its trajectory. For example, here are some key milestones in the evolution of AI, as highlighted in this article:

  • In the 1950s, Alan Turing published "Computer Machinery and Intelligence," introducing the Turing Test as a measure of computer intelligence. The first programming language for AI research, which is still used today, was introduced around this time.

  • During the 1970s, the American Association of Artificial Intelligence, now known as the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), was officially launched.

  • Things slowed down until the 1990s when IBM’s Deep Blue beat the world chess champion, Gary Kasparov, in 1997 – becoming the first program to beat a human chess champion.

  • During 2011 to 2014, there was the rise in voice controlled virtual assistants, such as Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri. This transformed how users accessed information, controlled environments, and shopped online, showcasing AI's potential for daily life improvement.

  • Between 2012 and 2019, Google developed DeepMind, which marked a turning point with groundbreaking achievements in deep learning and reinforcement learning.

  •  From 2020 to present the rise of Generative AI begins, which was marked by the launch of OpenAI's GPT. In late 2022, ChatGPT made headlines by attracting 1 million users within a week of its launch.

  • We also recently saw the launch of Anthropic, an AI safety startup that leverages constitutional AI. This approach trains models to be helpful, harmless, and honest.

  •  This leads us to a future of responsible AI, which refers to the design, development, and deployment of AI systems in an ethical and socially-aware manner.

While it seems that AI has exploded in 2023, the reality is that there was a long evolution to get us to where we are today. Without a doubt, the floodgates have opened and we will see AI evolve even more rapidly in these upcoming years.
