Now’s the Time for TEFCA FHIR Health Data Exchange
In April, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), along with The Sequoia Project, released the Common Agreement Version 2.0 (CA v2.0), which includes enhancements and updates to require support for FHIR API exchange.
According to the ONC, the intent is for TEFCA participants and sub-participants to exchange information directly more easily between themselves, as well as to more easily access their own health care information using apps of their choice via TEFCA.
To date, FHIR remains relatively untapped. However, according to this recent Health Data Management article, it is poised to provide critical data interoperability between payers, providers and researchers. Ultimately, this will enable the sharing of clinical and claims data intelligence that will power transformative applications, such as prior authorization, care management and quality measures.
The article also highlights how the complexity of integrating and managing an increasing variety of health data requires the FHIR specification to be continuously updated. This points to the need for a robust data governance operating model to ensure that FHIR specifications remain both comprehensive and compliant with existing and future regulations.
Last year, we highlighted how the FHIR at Scale Taskforce (FAST) is working to accelerate FHIR by identifying scalability gaps. The organization is also defining solutions to address current barriers and identify needed infrastructure for scalable FHIR adoption.
The foundation of FHIR comes down to being able to seamlessly share health records. Thankfully, RosettaHealth’s intuitive FHIR API allows care organizations to connect to national networks such as CareQuality, eHealth Exchange, and Commonwell. This enables simple access to electronic medical records anywhere in the nation through a very simple integration – removing the need for EHRs or heavy HIT systems.
We are fully in an era of health data ubiquity. Today, approximately 30 percent of the world's data volume is being generated by the healthcare industry. By 2025, the compound annual growth rate of data for healthcare will reach 36 percent, which is significantly faster than any other industry.
Now’s the time to leverage solutions for TEFCA FHIR health data exchange to be fully brought to life.
