The Majority of Hospitals Plan on TEFCA Participation
As we highlighted last week, TEFCA will likely be coming to fruition very soon – with it poised to provide critical data interoperability between payers, providers and researchers.
Some of the challenges of making TEFCA a reality are the complexity of integrating and managing an increasing variety of health data, as well as the need for a robust data governance operating model to ensure that FHIR specifications – a critical component of TEFCA – remain both comprehensive and compliant with existing and future regulations.
Despite these challenges hospitals and care systems are ready to embrace TEFCA. According to the ONC’s latest Data Brief and Quick Stat, 64 percent of U.S. hospitals plan to participate in TEFCA.
Following are other findings from the ONC:
Approximately 7 out of 10 hospitals that participated in national networks or health information exchanges (HIEs) planned to participate in TEFCA, compared to 4 out of 10 hospitals that did not participate in either type of network.
Hospitals with more resources, such as those that are larger, non-critical access, and affiliated with health systems, indicated greater awareness and had higher levels of planned participation in TEFCA when compared to smaller, critical access, and independent hospitals with fewer resources.
The percent of hospitals that were aware of TEFCA but did not know if they would participate decreased from 23 percent to 9 percent from 2022 to 2023.
