Enhancing Health Data Interoperability for Prior Authorizations

As we have highlighted before, prior authorization is one of the most challenging, time-consuming, and expensive tasks that medical offices handle. This is due to prior authorization essentially involving multiple stakeholders and requires both simple and complex processing to complete.

In addition, a recent study showed that 78 percent of physicians said issues with prior authorization resulted in patients forgoing care, and 19 percent said that prior authorization resulted in an event leading to a patient being hospitalized.

As featured in this recent Health Leaders article, the Interoperability and Prior Authorization Final Rule finalized in January was intended to alleviate some strain, but it’s too soon to tell how effective it's been. U.S. states have also joined the prior authorization reform efforts, with 30 introducing their own bills in 2023.

Of course, data interoperability is critical for prior authorization reform, but the sector has been slow to agree on data exchange standards. For example, many hospitals and health systems are hesitant to adopt the HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standard because of lack of resources. Many also believe that FHIR won’t be broadly adopted.

Many prior authorization consultants may find themselves stuck in the middle of these challenges – when their biggest task is helping medical practices to remove the burden of this effort.

Perhaps there’s a much easier solution for enhancing prior authorizations through effective health data exchange?

Thanks to RosettaHealth’s new GetPatientRecords offering, it is possible to simplify access to electronic medical records anywhere in the nation – through a straightforward integration.

GetPatientRecords provides instant and secure access to vital patient information without the need for manual processes, individual interfaces or heavy HIT systems, and it can be baked into a prior authorization consultant’s offerings.

The new solution removes the demand for extensive paperwork, patient consents, technical expertise, and adherence to strict access permissions and security protocols. GetPatientRecords streamlines this process, by enabling patient queries using just patient names and geographic areas.
